Green Sustainability Series, Part 1 – How Prefab Reduces Waste with Recycled Building Materials

From state-of-the-art healthcare facilities to towering multifamily residences, today’s design-centric buildings continue to push the envelope (in a good way) when it comes to sustainability. To highlight the ways modular prefabricated construction can support the building industry’s collective goal of reducing material waste and using resources more efficiently, we’re kicking off the new year with a three-part collective of sustainability-themed blogs.

In the first installment of our “Green Sustainability Series,” we explore how prefabricated construction methods use recycled building materials and reduce material waste and can play an integral role in meeting green building goals:

Building with recycled materials: While prefab construction has become a popular method for saving time during the construction process, it also offers developers the opportunity to partner with responsible manufacturers to reduce a project’s carbon footprint. For example, modular bathroom pod unit components are largely comprised of steel and wallboard – two building materials that can be produced using recycled content. SurePods relies on 100 percent recycled steel and 97 percent recycled wallboard to manufacture custom bathroom pods, further supporting clients’ green building goals.

Reducing material waste: Thanks to the precision manufacturing afforded by a factory-controlled setting, reducing material waste is an easily identifiable benefit of the prefab construction method. As correct amounts of material are ordered, unnecessary material waste is largely eliminated. In the instance a project does yield excess material scraps, SurePods is able to repurpose them in other in-house projects. And since modular units are only built-in indoor, climate-controlled environments, no material is lost or damaged from exposure to unpredictable elements (like the weather, for example).
