SurePods Celebrates Women in Construction Week

During the first week of March, The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is celebrating Women in Construction Week "to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.” We at SurePods would also like to recognize the many women in our own workforce and show how pre-fab is an attractive option for those wanting to participate in this impactful industry.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, just 10.3% of America’s construction workers are women. At SurePods, we are proud to more than double the industry average of women in our workforce. Our overall team is approximately 20% women and each is a deeply valued member of the SurePods family. But, there’s still much work to be done. We are continually working to increase the number of women who are part of our team and create opportunities in the workplace.

As for opportunities available, the prefabrication industry is booming, providing stability and opportunity for growth in a sector that’s changing the way people build. Plus, modular construction is safer, has better working conditions and offers ample opportunity to leave one’s mark.

Opportunities in modular construction

Safer

Of the various career paths in construction, pre-fab manufacturing is uniquely positioned to offer a safer working environment. Most modular building takes place at ground-level, which largely eliminates the likelihood of being injured by overhead debris. Those who love working with their hands don’t have to perform tasks several stories up and are freed from having to worry about falling from towering heights.

Better working conditions

A controlled factory environment is also ideal for those passionate about a skilled trade. By taking construction indoors, there’s no rain, sun or other weather conditions to get in the way. And, cutting-edge equipment lays at employees’ fingertips.

Like other modular facilities, the SurePods factory has a multitude of automated systems that help make the entire manufacturing process more efficient. Workers can take pride in knowing that they’re getting the job done in the most productive way possible, with the highest quality finish. Take gypsum handling, for example. In the field, such handling needs to be done by hand and often involves two people. In plants like SurePods, manufacturers add vacuum lifters that require only one person to operate for maximum effectiveness and empowerment.

Culture of respect

It’s further worth noting that the factory setting can help combat sexual harassment, a systemic issue found in the broader workplace. Since a majority of activities take place on a singular factory floor, management and HR are frequently near other workers. The close proximity means that these teams can immediately address any issues of misconduct.

At SurePods, we take sexual harassment very seriously and are committed to creating a culture of respect. There’s no room for unwelcome and inappropriate behavior, and we continue to advocate for a safe workplace.

Making a difference

With safer and better working conditions, employees can do their best work. At the end of the day, workers can find great satisfaction in having built a product that makes a difference. Hospitals with modular components designed around accessibility help people of all ages and ability levels get the best care possible, while prefabricated student housing sets up the next generation for success in a very green way. No matter the application, everyone can have a part in building structures that change lives.
