Project Notes – Hilton Garden Inn Homewood Suites Calgary
Situated at the corner of 7th Avenue and 4th Street SE, the new Hilton property in East Village is a 208,000 sq ft, 14-story, full-service hotel that combines the brands of Hilton Garden Inn Calgary Downtown and Homewood Suites Calgary Downtown under one roof. The project features a rooftop terrace with pool and fitness facilities together with library and convention services and two levels of underground parking.
To dramatically accelerate construction of the mid-rise, full-service hotel, Widewaters Group chose to use SurePods modular bathrooms as an innovative approach to shave months off the project plan. In fact, the new hotel developers expected to open it just 18 months after construction began.
The following is an excerpt from an article on the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) website. “Each pod is a self-contained bathroom complete with toilet, wall coverings, mirror and lighting fixtures. We install all the pods before we add the hotel’s exterior panels, which are also pre-fabricated. To complete the installation, each bathroom requires about one hour of a plumber’s time and one hour from an electrician. That’s it!” said Ed Shagen, Vice President of Hotel Development Western Region, Widewaters Group.”
Combining the two brands under one roof means that both short term and longer term stays can be accommodated in the 208,000 sq. ft. facility. Travelers will appreciate this hotel coming online as Calgary has historically been notorious for its lack of hotel accommodations.
